yamaha reface cs

Yamaha came out with a series of mini keyboards called the Reface.  There are four different models(CS,DX,CP,YC), but we’re gonna talk about the Yamaha Reface CS.  Out of the series of these portable instruments, the Yamaha Reface CS is the only one without presets.   In other words, you must create your own sounds!  CS actually stands for control synthesizer which is the perfect name for this guy because you have complete control.

Back in the 70’s, the early yamaha analog synthesizers were purchased mainly by programmers who didn’t mind taking the time to create sounds.   They really had to dig in as if building a computer program or something.  Nowadays, we ain’t got time for all that and this is one of the advantages of the Yamaha Reface CS.  The interface is extremely easy to use and everything is right in front of you.  Basically all you have to do is turn a bunch of faders up and down.

Features

  • 5 oscillator types including Multi-saw, Pulse, Oscillator Sync, Ring Modulation, FM
  • Onboard effects including Delay, VCM Phaser, VCM Chorus/Flanger and Distortion
  • 8 note polyphony for big chords or switch to mono mode for bass or lead sounds
  • Phrase looper for capturing ideas
  • Pedal input for volume control
  • Audio 1/4″ line outputs and 3.5mm line input allowing to hear outside audio source

Pros

  • Electric and can be battery operated (uses 6 AA batteries)
  • Built in speakers which means you don’t have to have an amp or headphones
  • Extremely light and compact making it very mobile
  • Keys feel great unlike many others compact synths where they feel too delicate

Cons

  • Looper only allows one sound and you cannot save it
  • Priced at $799, i’d like to see maybe at least $200 less (maybe in the future)
  • Pitch bender is slick but a little too small
